Perry is a Chicago native, birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. One of her first TV performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed her role. She did not explore acting as a profession until she reached adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse consequences stress can have. Perry said that she was timid to perform in high school but began acting at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry was able to land minor TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness led her back to California again where she began performing in the stage. Perry's mother and I appeared on Broadway with her as part of The Other Place, in 2013. She appeared in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was staged at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared nine times in The Family, an ABC film The Family, in 2016. In 2017, she played a recurring role on her own ABC political thriller Scandal which starred her father. That same year she portrayed a child character based on Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother in a younger version. She got the part by auditioning for an open role despite having a connection to this character.
